  4. congestive heart failure brought on by diabetes; in Seattle. First
  5. elected to Congress in 1936, he served six terms in the Senate.
  6. Fellow Democrat Walter Mondale once joked that as chairman of the
  7. Appropriations Committee, Magnuson divided federal funds
  8. fifty-fifty: half for his home state of Washington, half for the
  9. rest of the country.
